1. Rajinder Goel – Most Wicket Taker In Ranji Trophy
Rajinder Goel who was born in Haryana is a left spinner who has played with 4 teams in his career including Patiala, Southern Punjab, Delhi, and Haryana. He is the only bowler who has crossed the 600 wickets in his ranji trophy career and became the Highest wicket taker in Ranji Trophy. Rajinder Goel has taken the 25 ranji wickets in a single season 15 times throughout his career. Rajinder Goel has retired after taking 39 wickets in 1984-85 season.
Goel had done so much contribution to Haryana Cricket Association even after his retirement from ranji cricket. He used to watch the state level and even district level matches to give opportunity to young talents in Haryana team.
Once in a interview in the ESPNcricinfo in 2017 when the reporter asked, He said “hard work, practice, and patience is the main virtues which constitutes a great spinner. Without the dedication and hardwork you cannot the bowl consistently the good line and length, which is the key factor to defeat any batsman “he said”.
2. Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan
The former indian cricket team captain Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan who is popularly known as “venkat” is the only bowler with more than 500 wickets in ranji trophy history. After Rajinder, Venkat is the 2nd most player who has taken the most wickets in Ranji Trophy history by taking 531 wickets in his career.
Right-arm off break Venkataraghavan was born in Chennai in 1945 and has played with Tamil Nadu cricket team. Venkat was the captain of Indian Cricket Team at first Two World Cups. Later he became the umpire on elite international test panel. He was retired from first class cricket in 1985.
Irrespective of his height 5’11 he was master of art of spin bowling. He used to surprise batsman’s with his flipper bowling which sometimes look like Gundappa Viswanath. He can bowl from any side whether it is over the wicket or round the wicket.
Venkat was also known for his fielding where he used to set the bar high in the whole team by his athletic fielding abilities. Before Venkat, spinners were not used to known for quick fielding. He was not only known for his game but also for his scouting abilities where he once introduced a great fielder in the team in the name of Dilip Vengsarkar in 1975 during the new-zealand tour.
3. Sunil Joshi
Yet another former Indian batter Sunil Joshi who later in his career became the selector of the India cricket team. He is the 3rd player who gets the elite spot of highest wicket taker in Ranji Trophy by picking 479 wickets in his entire ranji trophy career. He has represented karnataka cricket with his left arm orthodox bowling where he impressed everyone with his spin web.
Karnataka Born Sunil Joshi was not only known for his left arm spin bowling but also for his batting abilities where he has scored 5,129 runs in his domestic career. On his Ranji debut in Hubli, he remained unbeaten on 83 but the match was called off due the demolition of Babri Masjid.
On his 27th birthday Sunil Joshi made it to the test debut in the Birmingham, where he unfortunately injured by breaking his finger and had to come home. After coming to India he made the comeback where scored more than 500 runs and got the 50 wickets in ranji trophy season and contributed in winning the title to Karnataka cricket team.
Sunil Joshi Trainer “Bishan Singh Bedi” used to say that it is surprising to not get enough chances in the Indian cricket team despite giving some amazing performance against south africa in one day internationals. Joshi never got the enough chances to prove himself in the team, Due to the lack of support and confidence it can be the reason for his under performance.
